Shaking It Loose...

Being that I am such a tech geek, I keep up on the latest gadgetry, toys, trinkets.

I don't, however, like cellphones at all. I like the technology, mind you; it's the application I dislike so much. We have grown adults walking around using them like pacifiers...when something gets boring, watch them reach for the binky. Kids don't even seem to be aware that life exists even when it isn't on the other end of a cell call.

But my real problem is that I got one for the obvious reasons. Safety, convenience, security. Turns out, mine is turned off a lot for a lot of other reasons. though.

It never rings when I want it to, always rings when I don't. It's a portable invasion of privacy, as far as I am concerned.

And people who have sense of courtesy, manners or civility feel free to invite us into their personal nonsense on a daily basis. And I say nonsense because, as I have figured out, people with brains and class don't hang their filthy laundry for the world to hear. People without those two things have no problem spewing their personal business anywhere and everywhere.

Anyone who has read me here realizes this is nothing new. My un-love of the mighty cell has been around for a while. It's gone from a peeve to an outright dislike. I figure these things aren't going away, I better do something. Legal I mean.

I guess this is my attempt to shake it out of my system.

Perchance To Dream...

I dreamt that I was using my cell phone to send a text. I was using my headset in the dream and was composing the text using my voice. I was very happy about that.

Then I woke up. Not happy. My phone doesn't do that in real life, but that wasn't the problem.

I mean, with all great stuff that there is to dream about, my brain comes up with that?

I think I need a tune-up.

Thinner

I had a chuckle the other day when CBS 880AM, a local news radio station, headlined a story about Apple with "iNuts, your leader has spoken!"

Steve Jobs held a conference to celebrate the release of the new iPod Nano, which is pretty cool, considering. It offers video playback along with music, and it's smaller than ever.

These things have more storage and features, plus they get smaller and thinner, every time Apple releases a new edition. It's incredible. I have one of the original iPods, and it's now the equivalent of the Model T Ford. I almost feel burdened, carrying around my 2 or 3 oz antiquity.

Just as there's a thing called terminal velocity, I figure there has to be a point where these iPods can't get any smaller or thinner, though. I mean, eventually, the thing would be so small, or so thin, that you wouldn't even know if you were holding it. And for people like me, that's not a good thing...

"Hey, Stup, got your iPod?"

"I dunno!"

Between then and now, there's room for lots of possibilities. Think about it! Thinner, thinner, smaller, and smaller...

  • The iPod "News"- so small and thin that it could be incorporated right into the pages of your daily newspaper. Of course, that only works if we still print newspapers at the time.

  • The iPod "Stamp"- slap a little glue on the back, and make it a recorder. People could record their letters instead of writing them, and stick 'em right to the envelope!

  • The iPod "Tissue"- a player so thin you could blow your nose into it. Or, put a whole bunch of them on a roll, and put 'em in the bathroom. Listen to a couple of tunes, then, well, you know.

Ahh, yes, the possibilities.

I'm kind of loving my old Model T iPod for the moment though. I use it mostly when I drive, plug it right into the car sound system and all, and I know none of us wants a Stupid watching videos while he drives, so it's the status quo for the time being.

Imagine...

Imagine you have a contractor come and install a nice, new front door on your home.

Now imagine, as soon as the door is installed, you close it. Only now, that makes all the windows fall out.

So you replace the windows. All done. Except now, you open them up, and the roof flies off. You set out and replace the roof, except when you're done, the roof is heavy and all the walls cave in.

See the trend?

That's kind of what it's like to deal with Comcast. The Customer Reps are very nice, and they work hard to keep the issues taken care of. But, every time one person fixes something, something else breaks.

Sigh.

Comments...NOT

Comments. Yes, we all love comments. We love getting them, but I think we also like leaving them for people, too.

So how would you feel, if something went wrong with the blogging platform you use, and the comments section wouldn't work? It'd kind of bug me, and I assume most of you wouldn't be too happy either. I'm not talking about people who disable comments, I don't care about that. I'm talking about having a blog that invites comments, but that due to some technical glitch, they don't get through.

Weblogs has a whole bunch of mostly "professional" blogs out there. I found one, called "Styledash", where they mostly make fun of the latest "fashion trends" and the pompous idiots who parade around in these atrocities. I get some laughs over there, and like to leave a comment or 10,000.

Only, for better than a week now, the comment function doesn't work. They do that thing where they send a confirmation email containing a link that you must click to activate the comment. But the click does nothing.

See, half the fun for me over there wasn't leaving comments, it was reading the 100's of comments they'd get when they wrote something particularly bratty.

I just hope this doesn't give Blogger any ideas. For the most part, this works pretty well, no?
