Accent! And a Little Peeve...

We here in the Northeast take some crap about our "accents", NY, Brooklyn, Boston and all, and it's pretty comical. But some of you Left Coasters have some accent stuff of your own going on.

I spent a late night with my kids and nieces last night. They were watching their various teen stuff last night, and one thing that really hit my ear is the way they say certain things, particularly around L.A.

One girl said something along the lines of, "It's our biggest upgrade ever", only it sounded to me more like "it's our beggest upgrade avar."

And they say "thanks" or "thank you" and it sounds like "thinks" or "think you". Not to forget "Hower you?"

And on other related note, what's going on with a lot of women and their vocal habits? I'm hearing this so much lately, and yikes, it's like nails on a blackboard. Listen to this woman a minutes, paying attention to the way her voice goes at the end of every sentence.

When did this get started, and what's up with it?

First of all, I love east coast accents. Always have. I grew up in WPB, Florida, with a lot of time in childhood spent in Texas, so - if anything - I might pronounce some words with more of a southern accent on occasion.

I agree with you that west coasters can have that tendency to either elongate a word or enunciate in a sort of ...choppy way. ...and, yes, it can be very annoying. :)

  2. As a left coast native, I'd have to say our accent is not as annoying. ;-)

If you come to Utah you hear things like mount'n, goin', and some incorrect grammar--such as have broke (instead of have broken), etc. Drives. Me. Crazy.

  3. btw--that lady's voice got really annoying. What's up with the trailing off?

  4. This voice says one thing to me: insincere.

  5. Honestly, that woman's voice is pretty good compared to the way I'm hearing young women and teenage girls talk lately. Over-emphasizing Ss, Cs, etc., almost like a lisp. And ending every sentence as if it's a question.

"I was at the mall? At The Gap? And, like, I saw this hoodie that I like, totally loved? But, like, they didn't have my size? It like, soooo totally sucked."

But, as I think of it, they do also trail the sentences off the same way as your video woman. It's like, so totally annoying? ;)
