To Strike, Or Not To Strike?

I heard a little blurb about the possibility of a strike by the Screenwriter's Guild. I just wonder though, if that would necessarily be a bad thing. I mean, look at it like this:

Strikes stop work, and a lot of times, management brings in replacement labor (scabs). Maybe if that happens, the scabs can come in, do some writing, and we might actually have a shot at getting some decent tv shows and movies?

What do you think? Can things get any worse than they are now?

  1. Hopefully they'll go on strike for a long time (what are they striking for anyway?)

Maybe we can get some people in there who can write something decent; and by decent I mean clean, family friendly, etc.

    Hi Jimmy,
Actually, the writers are gearing up to strike for a reason. They're responsible for the vast majority of creative concepts in Hollywood but hardly get compensated accordingly. Hopefully, they'll get more of their fare share. As for "scabs," I don't expect a lot of talented "scabs" to come rushing in because the Guild has made it known that scabs will be barred from the Guild (meaning they won't be able to get Guild benefits down the road). For now, the writers are cranking out as much as they can as quickly as they can before the potential/likely strike.

  3. Well now hey wait a minute...
    I agree and I dont...

For one that term...ewwwww...as I would run in and be one of them...I have info on the strike, easy enough go to WGAe website and read.

Yet I agree about the quality. See being a SPEC writer(long story I will splain if you want)...really keeps us(SPEC) out of the loop. "REAL" screenwriters dont like us much anyway.
To get in the guild, is hard. VERY hard. Affleck and Damon were an anomolie. If I were to sell one of my scripts, I still wouldnt be sponsored ino the union, as I would have to work FOR a studio or Producer. They would buy my words, and basically give credit to another team of writers. Unless I had a great agent, which is a B*tch in itself, an agent doesnt want to know you if you havent sold a script.
So for me? Maybe some good will come of the strike. If not at least give people some time to catch up on the Indie quality stuff out there! And there is much!
    Okay I am done babbling.
    Peace my friend!

  5. That's sort of the Iraq argument applied to TV, isn't it?

Trust me, it can get worse.

This has been the single worst television season I've ever encountered. Thank God for cable and reality TV. Most of them suck, too, just not as badly.
