Curiosity Taking Me "Away"

OK, I know I'm usually grumpy and sarcastic about nearly everything, but this is a genuine request for information to satisfy some curiosity.
I notice from time to time, that there are people who are logged on to their AOL or AIM accounts all day, with "away" messages up. Sometimes, if you look during the day, the away messages are different, too. But I mean they're logged on days at a time, with the "away" messages.
OK, so why is that? There's a reason for everything...

  1. and then, there's those people that you KNOW are online, because like they email you - but they have their privacy settings up to hide themselves...or perhaps they are just hiding from ME *giggle*

  2. Many people who are on broadband service have no need to ever disconnect.

  3. Pfft, who knows. I think I am one of those people, except I usually just leave without the message.

    When I do have a message it's pretty pointless. : )

  4. The away message, in my case, is to prevent IMs, because I hate them. Oh, and people who go to AOL chat rooms can be located unless the away message is on. Located and joined, by people they don't necessarily care to have join them in every chat room they go to.

I stay online the entire time I am home, but I am invisible so no one can see me to IM me.

I put on my away message, because I go to school on line, and I don't want to have to deal with IM's when I'm in school. That's all!

My away message is automatic if the pc left idle. . I think so anyway.
